About Rio Vista Middle School
22 regular education classrooms
707 students served
The newest middle school in the district, Rio Vista Middle School opened its doors on August 27, 2007, with state-of-the-art technology, science labs and computer carts. Because Rio Vista believes in giving students a wide range of opportunities to grow, we offer top education, as well as a host of art, leadership and sporting activities. Students can participate in the orchestra, choral and band program; an associated student body that facilitates school activities; and the Rio Vista Condors basketball and cheerleading teams. Through the local Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme, students also can participate in art, computer and study activities after school. We encourage students to explore their world, so many will travel on the class trip to Washington DC in the spring, and many will visit the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza to learn about theatre.
Mission Statement for Rio Vista Middle School
Rio Vista Middle School is a dedicated learning environment wherein all students are receiving instruction that promotes rigor, relevance, and relationships tied to high expectations. The campus is culturally diverse and supports respect for all students, staff, and families that are part of this socially, academically, and physically safe environment. Each day of instruction is focused on motivating and inspiring students and staff as the teachers cover grade-level standards that are accessible to all students. We seek to promote life-long learning among our students, staff, and families through exposure to a well-rounded education that includes the humanities, mathematics, the sciences, the arts, sports, and dedication to service to the community. The emphasis is on “We can!” Together we can develop a sense of belonging and collaboration among students, staff, and families that will lead to success for all.
Principal's Message
Welcome to Rio Vista Middle School! RVMS is a very special place, with a dynamic, dedicated staff, and an amazing campus. We offer our students a safe and rigorous middle school experience, and we strive to guide each learner in meeting his/her full potential. To that end, we continue to focus on increasing our students’ developmental assets through four very special programs: The Anti-Defamation League "No Place for Hate” curriculum, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), strategies that create a college-bound culture, Capturing Kids’ Hearts, and Judicious Discipline. All four of the programs facilitate student success, and create a caring culture that is conducive to student learning.
This year we will be implementing the Standards-Based report card, which will provide students and their families with important information about whether students have learned the California State Content Standards. Parent meetings will be held to increase better understanding of the new scores.
We are anxious to cultivate a culture and sense of community with our RVMS families and neighbors, and value your participation. As an important member of your students’ success team, we hope that you will support them by monitoring their homework, communicating regularly with their teachers and staff, and volunteering your time and/or resources. Please feel free to contact me at (805) 981-1507, my email address is kbaker@rio.k12.ca.us, or you are always welcome to stop by my office. Let’s all continue to build on our RVMS Condor PRIDE!
